German police say a 42-year-old man tried to set fire to the Chinese Embassy in Berlin early this morning, and no one was hurt when embassy staff used fire extinguishers to put out the flames. The man has been arrested, but police have not provided a possible motive.
Berlin police said in a statement: “Police arrested a man this morning accused of throwing several arson devices at an embassy on Brueckenstrasse.”
According to AFP, police did not specify which country the targeted embassy belonged to, but there are no other embassies on Brueckenstrasse besides China.
The Chinese website, on the other hand, noted that the consular overseas affairs office of the Chinese Embassy in Germany is located on Berlin’s Brückenstrasse.
According to the police, the suspect is accused of throwing incendiary devices into the embassy wall at 6 a.m. today.
The statement noted, “The devices hit the corner of one wall of the embassy building and the embassy personnel put out the fire with fire extinguishers.” No one was injured.
Guards who witnessed the attack then detained the 42-year-old suspect at an adjacent intersection, and police arrived and arrested him.
Police did not provide further information about the suspect or his possible motive, saying only that the case had been taken over by criminal investigators.
