Commenting on the RCEP agreement, Singapore’s Lianhe Zaobao newspaper concluded that “mainland China, a key player in the agreement, will be more economically motivated, while Taiwan and the United States, which are absent, will face the risk of marginalization and more competition in the Asia-Pacific region”.
Singapore has always been politically inclined towards the authoritarian Chinese Communist Party (CCP), because Singapore itself is an authoritarian state in the guise of democracy, so subjective sympathy and support for the CCP is of course inevitable.
But to assert that the U.S. and Taiwan will be marginalized because the RCPA does not include the U.S. and Taiwan is naive.
How could the United States be included in the first place? The so-called “region” is Asia, and the U.S. is not an Asian country, so why should the U.S. get involved? Besides, Trump is already a unilateralist, and he would be reluctant to be your “partner”. Earlier, Trump has withdrawn from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), proving that Trump has no interest in such a broad-based, multi-party agreement.
Even if Biden were to come to power and embrace multilateralism, wouldn’t it be easy for Americans to form their own “trading partner” relationship agreements? Japan, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, and so on… are they the ones that the U.S. would jump at with a wave? There is also Vietnam, which is now at war with the U.S., and Singapore and Indonesia, which are major Asian economies, but who would dare to cut off their seats from the U.S.? They have trade with the U.S. themselves, and what they did before and will do again, how is the U.S. marginalized?
As for Taiwan, many of Taiwan’s industries and processing industries have been investing in Southeast Asian countries for a long time. Taiwan media reported that TSMC’s market value has been promoted to one of the world’s top ten, second only to Alibaba and Tencent among the large enterprises on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. Now that Alibaba and Tencent are being suppressed by the Communist Party of China (CPC), TSMC will have a hard time in the future, and its market value will go down rather than up.
The Chinese Communist Party is counting on TSMC’s help in supplying chips to meet its urgent needs. TSMC is already overwhelmed with orders from the U.S. and other Western countries, and is waiting for the CCP to partner with it?
In addition, Taiwan’s steel, electronics, chemical and other large enterprises, have roots in Southeast Asia, the products of Taiwanese enterprises, basically, can be exported through the channels of Southeast Asian countries. Taiwan has been suppressed by the Chinese Communist Party for many years, and many enterprises have invested and set up factories in mainland China. If Taiwan does not join the CCP’s circle, it will be marginalized, which is really a shallow and petty view.
The Chinese Communist Party is boycotted by European and American countries, and the repeated epidemics have hindered the economic operation of various countries, making it difficult to recover in the short term. Under such a bad situation, it is reasonable to engage in a partnership to build up courage, but whether the actual effect is as the CPC wishes, no one knows.
Taiwan’s economy is experiencing an unprecedented takeoff, with major companies from around the world coming to Taiwan to establish roots. Taiwan is confident that it can still develop trade relations with various Asian countries. Taiwan is very confident that it can still develop trade relations with different Asian countries, and it has a place to stay.
Is the Chinese Communist Party Congress economically motivated by RCEP? Of course, it is better than nothing, but although trade is reciprocal, there is also competition between them. Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand all have their own interests, and their relations with China are unbalanced. In terms of international politics and multilateral trade, they are all at odds with each other. If Japan and the Chinese Communist Party were partners, the Japanese government would not have to pay for Japanese companies to move out of the mainland.
