Since Xi Jinping came to power, the Chinese Communist Party has further tightened its ideological control over colleges and universities. Recently, the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) is preparing to revise the Regulations on the Work of Grassroots Organizations of the Communist Party of China in General Institutions of Higher Education, which is believed to further strengthen the organizational and ideological control over universities with “Xi Thought” on the eve of the centennial of the CPC’s founding.
In a report published on March 8, Voice of America quoted Xia Yeliang, a former professor at Peking University’s School of Economics, as saying that the Chinese Communist Party has been strengthening party building and ideological and political education in colleges and universities for years, eliminating any dissenting voices in order to cultivate tame tools.
“It is now obvious that the aim is to brainwash these people, to transform the students, the young teachers, the whole intellectuals into the Party’s imperial tools, to become tame tools. They are saying that they want to train red and professional successors, but in reality you think you are going to be a successor, those second and third generation of the Reds don’t recognize you yet. Who is the real successor. These people are at most the successor of the working class, then as slaves. Where are you qualified to take over, you can be a slave.”
Xia Yeliang said he had contacted many college students during his more than a decade of teaching at Peking University before 2014, when most people thought joining the party was not a glamorous affair. But while the Voice of America recently spoke to several current college students, a senior who said he was an active member of the party said many of his classmates were still in high spirits about joining the party, except for a few who thought the “situation” and the topic were sensitive and didn’t want to talk about it.
Xia Yeliang said that it is sad that many college and high school students who have been successfully brainwashed by Chinese Communist propaganda do not realize that they have been brainwashed, and believe that the Chinese Communist system is better than that of the United States, that China is more successful than the United States in controlling epidemics, that Chinese vaccines are better than those of the United States, that the Chinese economy is better, that China is even safer and has a better living environment, that China will surpass the United States in the near future, and that it will replace the United States in terms of ideology and world values. Blind nationalism and so-called “patriotism” are on the rise.
Since the founding of the Chinese Communist Party, it has never relaxed its control over ideology, especially for the educated intellectual youth who have some independent thinking. Even in 1980, when the CCP claimed to have launched the so-called “reform and opening up” era, the Ministry of Education and the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League issued a joint circular entitled “Opinions on Strengthening the Ideological and Political Work of Students in Colleges and Universities”, which provided “Marxist-Leninist theory courses” in colleges and universities. The “Marxist-Leninist Theory” course was widely taught in colleges and universities. By 1989, after the June 4 massacre in Tiananmen Square, the CCP further strengthened its emphasis on ideological education.
When Xi Jinping came to power, he continued the CCP’s old path.
Xia Yeliang said, “Since Xi Jinping came to power everyone can see clearly that he has just intensified brainwashing education, ideological control, and suppression of intellectuals. Shortly after he took office, he published a ‘seven no-talk’ policy for colleges and universities, firstly for teachers in colleges and universities, which is absurd and ridiculous, including not to talk about mistakes in the history of the Communist Party and not to talk about civil society. Then they reinforced the ideological work for young teachers and students in colleges and universities, often holding classes that are a bit like the political study and brainwashing education during the Cultural Revolution, linked to your performance and prospects, including your perch space.”
After the Ministry of Education released the “Guideline for the Construction of Curriculum Civics in Higher Education” in June 2020, declaring that “to comprehensively promote the construction of curriculum Civics is to help students shape a correct worldview, outlook on Life, and values,” Mr. Chen Kuide, an independent commentator in the United States, had analyzed to Radio Free Asia that the CCP should be viewed from the opposite side If the CCP wants to introduce something, there must be a big problem in this area, and the strong push for party building in turn highlights the insecurity of the CCP regime:.
“The Chinese Communist Party used a very large force in the previous period, including the purge of universities, the dismissal of disobedient teachers and professors, to strengthen the control of young people. And with the first anniversary of last year’s Hong Kong anti-Send-China campaign now, and after the US-China trade war and the Wuhan Epidemic, the CCP has found itself in a growing sense of crisis, with the regime on all sides.”
“The CCP is now going back into seclusion, and the CCP’s increasing isolation in the world has made it feel the need to tighten its control over ideas so that young people can gradually adapt to the same set of ideological indoctrination from the Maoist era, which I think is the CCP’s main aim.”
According to the official Xinhua News Agency, the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee met on February 26 to discuss revisions to the Regulations on the Work of Grassroots Organizations of the Communist Party of China in General Institutions of Higher Education. The meeting emphasized that “it is necessary to unswervingly adhere to and strengthen the Party’s overall leadership of colleges and universities, constantly strengthen and improve the Party’s construction in colleges and universities, promote the deep integration of the Party’s construction in colleges and universities with the development of the higher education business, and ensure that the Party’s education policies and major decisions and deployments of the Party Central Committee are effectively implemented in colleges and universities,” which is thought to mean a new round of brainwashing campaign in colleges and universities Arrival.
