AstraZeneca Vaccine Suspended in Austria After Female Nurse Dies and Contracts Lung Disease

Authorities in Zwettl, Austria, reported on Sunday (7) that two female nurses died and another suffered a pulmonary embolism after receiving a vaccine developed by British pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca in collaboration with Oxford University. The authorities stressed that there is no evidence of a direct relationship with the vaccination, but for safety reasons, the use of the same batch of vaccine has been suspended.

The tragic death was of a 49-year-old woman who died of a blood clotting disorder, and a 35-year-old woman who suffered a pulmonary embolism. Both were nurses at the Zwedel clinic and received the same batch of vaccine. AstraZeneca stressed that all vaccine batches are subject to strict quality control and that no serious side effects have been reported, and said it is liaising with the Austrian government to provide assistance in the investigation.
