Alaska Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R)
Former President Donald Trump said Saturday (March 6) that he will oppose the candidacy of Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) in the 2022 midterm elections.
In a media statement, Trump said, “I don’t know what other people will think next year, but I know what I will do – I will oppose a senator from Alaska from running for office.”
The statement said, “Her vote to elect radical left-wing Democrat Deb Haaland as secretary of the interior is another example of Murkowski’s lack of support for Alaska.”
The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee voted Thursday (March 4) to approve Haaland and send his nomination to the Senate floor for a vote. Murkowski joined Democrats in voting for Harland, while other Republicans on the committee opposed Harland’s nomination, primarily because of Harland’s anti-fossil fuel stance.
If confirmed, Harland would be responsible for managing federal public lands, including oil and gas leases on public lands, while the Biden administration has tended to discourage fossil fuel development on U.S. soil. Harland’s policy stance could largely affect Alaska.
Murkowski said she reached a consensus with the White House for communication reasons and denied that she was trying to reach a deal with the Biden Administration.
“I’m not talking about a deal, but trying to get a sense from the White House of where they are on certain things and just sharing my views on certain things that we’ve heard. So: communication,” she told reporters.
During the March 6 discussion of the Epidemic relief bill, Murkowski proposed sending $800 million in emergency relief funds to elementary and secondary schools, and the proposal passed the Senate with a majority vote.
Murkowski also chose to join the minority of Republican senators who voted to find the former president guilty during his second impeachment trial against Trump in 2021.
