Paraguay’s government failed to prevent the epidemic set off riots, the capital city of Asuncion fell into the battlefield

The government of Paraguay, a friend of South America, has caused public discontent and the resignation of the health minister because of the ineffective prevention of the Epidemic.

Hundreds of rioters gathered in downtown Asuncion (Asuncion) near the Capitol building, demanding that President Mario Abdo Benitez step down, security forces fired rubber bullets and tear gas at them, while demonstrators broke down security fences, burned barricades and threw rocks at police officers.

The record number of new cases of Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) in Paraguay, coupled with the near collapse of medical facilities nationwide, triggered a popular riot that turned downtown Asuncion into a battleground of flames, smoke and gunfire. AFP counted about 20 people injured.

Paraguayan congressmen yesterday have asked Health Minister Mazzoleni (Julio Mazzoleni) to step down, earlier today he has resigned, President Abdo has appointed Deputy Minister Popa (Julio Borba) to replace Mazzoleni as minister.

According to Johns Hopkins University’s COVID-19 data, Paraguay today reported a record high of 1,501 new confirmed cases and 22 new deaths, bringing the cumulative number of confirmed cases to 165,811 and the cumulative number of deaths to 3,278.

Reuters reports that the current COVID-19 vaccination rate in Paraguay is extremely low, with less than 0.1% of the population having been vaccinated.
