Recently large numbers of Honduran migrants are on their way to the U.S.-Mexico border
At a White House press briefing on Friday, March 5, White House spokesman Jen Psaki said the Biden administration does not accept former President Trump‘s (Trump) advice on immigration policy.
In February, the Biden Administration unveiled a new refugee asylum process, reversing Trump’s decree to send illegal immigrants back to Mexico. Republicans have been warning the Biden administration that this would lead to a migrant crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border.
On March 5, Trump issued a statement through the “Save America” political action committee, accusing the Biden administration of “triggering a tsunami at the border. Pusaki responded that day that the previous administration’s immigration policy was “immoral” and therefore did not accept Trump’s proposal.
According to Axios, documents from the U.S. Department of health and Human Services (HHS) show that Customs and Border Protection (CBP) turns over an average of 321 illegal immigrant children to HHS each day, a significant increase in the influx in February compared to the record of 203 children per week at the end of January this year.
Because of the surge in immigration, Psaki had said on March 4 that the Biden administration had sent members to visit the southern border and brief him on how to handle the recent influx of migrant children. But she did not disclose the timing or details of the visit.
At a March 5 press conference, a question was asked about how the Biden administration would accommodate the 117,000 illegal immigrant children that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) predicts will be there by May. Pusaki, for his part, did not answer the question, citing a policy of non-disclosure.
In late February, the Biden administration reopened a facility in Texas that houses illegal immigrant children. The Texas Migrant Family Detention Center will be converted into an expedited processing center to screen illegal immigrant families.
On March 4, Texas Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas) issued a statement noting that approximately 10,000 illegal immigrants have been arrested at the Del Rio border in the past week and that the United States is “weeks, if not days, away” from a crisis.
Former Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf told Newsmax TV on Feb. 26, “Ultimately, the Biden administration, through its policies, is facilitating and encouraging these people to cross the border illegally.”
