The Communist Party of China (CPC) announced a ban on the import of Taiwan pineapples (known as pineapples on the mainland) from March 1. On March 4, CCTV reported that the price of pineapples in Xwing County, Guangdong Province, had skyrocketed.
The CCTV report said that local farmers are busy harvesting pineapples in Xuwen this year as the market demand for pineapples has increased significantly. The report also said that the local pineapple field purchase price has increased from more than 1 yuan per catty last year to 2.8 yuan to 3 yuan per catty. This is the highest price in 30 years,” said a grower.
The same day the land media “headlines” reported that the local canned Food processing plant manufacturers said that the current Xuwen used to make canned pineapple field purchase price from the same period last year, 30, 40 cents per catty to 1.2 yuan per catty or even 2 yuan.
Reports say that the high price of pineapples is due to a halving of local production. But many Chinese netizens believe that it may be related to the ban on Taiwan pineapple imports: “Taiwan pineapple was already better than the mainland, now the Taiwan pineapple ban, the mainland black-hearted farmers to raise the price of pineapple”, “over there a ban on this side immediately increased prices, or familiar routine. ” There are also netizens said, no matter how the price rose, the final bill or consumers.
According to CNN, Xuwen County has an annual output of 700,000 tons of pineapples, the first in the country. The report did not mention the decline in production this year, but said that because of the climate, this year’s pineapple taste sweeter.
Shanghai’s “Interface News” reported on March 3 that the 24-hour search volume for “Xuwen pineapples” on the mainland’s largest online trading platform for agricultural products, “Pingduoduo,” was 11 times higher than last year due to the ban on imports of Taiwan pineapples. The number of searches for “Xuwen pineapple” increased 11 times in 24 hours compared to last year.
According to public information, China imports about 45,000 tons of pineapples from Taiwan every year.
