Google was exposed to develop top-secret AR project “Wolverine”

March 5, according to Business Insider magazine, Google parent company Alphabet’s X Lab is quietly developing a top-secret augmented reality (AR) device that will allow humans to gain enhanced auditory capabilities. The project’s insider code name is “Wolverine” (Wolverine), inspired by the movie “X-Men: Wolverine”. In that movie, Wolverine gained sensitive hearing after a genetic mutation.

The team began working on the project in earnest in 2018, launching a number of prototypes that have won the favor of executives such as Google co-founder Sergey Brin. An X spokesman confirmed that the early project aims to “explore the future of hearing,” but declined to comment on project details.

The Wolverine team is developing a device designed to be worn in the ear and integrate multiple sensors, the sources said. The technology will have multiple applications, and one of the biggest early challenges will be voice separation, allowing the wearer to focus on a single speaker in a group environment with overlapping conversations.
