House Speaker Nancy Pelosi celebrated the House’s passage of HR1 on Thursday, saying the bill would help advance the Democratic Party’s agenda on everything from climate change to gun control to controlling misinformation.
Pelosi claimed that the legislation would “protect voting rights” by removing “barriers to participation,” a likely reference to the federal takeover of state voting procedures, particularly over state voter ID laws.
Pelosi said the first 300 pages of the “HR1 for the People” bill were written by John Lewis to remove voter suppression tactics from our political system, and some of the rest was written to protect the integrity of our electoral system and to protect the physical infrastructure of our elections.”
Countless Republicans have warned against HR1 because of the impact the bill would have on the states and their primary role in conducting federal House and Senate elections and presidential elections. Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.), one of the most vocal Republican lawmakers to oppose the bill after its passage, said Americans should be “outraged” that House Democrats passed the proposal.
