Royalty in the swamp: Liz Cheney’s pro-establishment ex-Speaker orchestrates fundraiser for him

Breitbart News published an exclusive story headlined “Paul Ryan (R-WI) Plans Fundraiser for Liz Cheney (Royalty in the Swamp)”.

Former Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-WI) will hold a fundraiser at the end of March for Rep. Liz Cheney (R-CA), the embattled chairman of the House Republican Conference, according to an invitation obtained by Breitbart News.

The fundraiser, a “virtual convention,” is scheduled for Thursday, March 25, at 11 a.m. Eastern Time. The invitation asks donors to make a “suggested contribution” of $2,900 to “attend” or $5,800 to “co-host” Ryan-Cheney’s conference.

Another interesting detail in the fundraising invitation is that the campaign address of “Liz Cheney of Wyoming” is in Alexandria, Virginia, a suburb of Washington, D.C., and donors are asked to make checks payable to that address. Cheney’s campaign is based in the nation’s capital, not the state she claims to represent, and her main challenger is sure to use this against her.

The news is significant because Cheney is facing multiple primary challenges in the wake of her vote to impeach President Trump. Trump publicly criticized her and her fellow Republican impeachment conspirators during a speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) last weekend, naming all 17 House and Senate Republicans who voted to impeach or convict him and saying they needed to be removed from office.

Ryan, a former Speaker who watched Republicans lose a historic majority in the 2018 midterm elections, announced he was not running for re-election and was retiring ahead of the midterm elections earlier this year. During his tenure as Speaker, Ryan was lackluster and did not make any big accomplishments, except for things like the tax cuts that President Trump carried out. He leaves office with a historically low approval rating of just 12 percent, according to one poll, indicating his ineffectiveness and failure in the job.

One Trump ally, when asked about Ryan’s decision to try to hitch his wagon to Cheney by holding this fundraiser, told Breitbart News that it’s not surprising that two failed establishment politicians would hitch their wagons together.

Trump allies told Breitbart News, “Asking a Washington insider like Paul Ryan to host a fundraiser for your campaign is something only a candidate with a 13 percent approval rating like Liz Cheney would do,”

A different Republican source, a consultant working for multiple House Republican candidates’ campaigns, added that Ryan and his associates in the Washington lobbying community, who saved Cheney from this conspiracy, are not surprising. The official added that any donors appearing at the fundraiser should be “ashamed of themselves” for working against the Republican Party’s interest in pushing to take back the House majority in 2022.

“It shouldn’t be surprising that the pro-Amnesty, pro-war face of the swamp is trying to save Cheney,” Republican officials told Breitbart News.” While Liz Cheney may be the royalty of the swamp, she has done more than any political figure to divide the Republican Party and prevent us from taking back our majority. Any so-called ‘Republican’ donor who gives money to support her divisive efforts should be ashamed of themselves and work directly against the effort to build a winning and united coalition to retake the House in 2022.”

Ryan has been as hostile to Trump throughout his career as Cheney and the other nine Republicans who voted to impeach him. Back in 2017, Breitbart News released a recording of a call during the 2016 presidential campaign in which Ryan slammed Trump, “I will not defend Donald Trump – not now, not ever.” Ryan said during that call.

He has made good on that promise by consistently and repeatedly attacking and undermining Trump. Ryan left Congress to join the board of Fox News – for which Trump has criticized Ryan and Fox News. Fox News pounced on Trump during the 2020 campaign, including during the first presidential debate hosted by Chris Wallace.

Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, is now facing challenges from state Sen. Anthony Bouchard (D) and newly announced candidate state Rep. Chuck Gray (R). Polls show that Cheney is in serious trouble and is likely headed for an eventual defeat. Republicans across the party have repeatedly attacked her by name and have heavily criticized her in interviews and speeches at CPAC. Her standing within the party is rapidly declining, just as it has after Ryan’s year or so as speaker.
