The media reported today that a knife attack in Vetlanda, a city located in southern Sweden, left seven people injured yesterday, and the suspect is a 22-year-old Afghan man who came to Sweden in 2018.
AFP reports that Swedish police are investigating in the direction of a possible terrorist attack. In a statement released by police today, the number of injured was revised downward from eight to seven, but no further details were provided.
The suspect was taken to hospital for treatment after police shot him in the leg in a knife attack yesterday afternoon in Vätlander, a city of 13,000 people.
Police told AFP that the man used a “sharp weapon,” and local media reported that the suspect was wielding a sharp blade.
Police did not disclose the suspect’s nationality, but according to several media reports, he is from Afghanistan and came to Sweden in 2018.
Regional police chief Malena Grann later explained at a press conference that the initial investigation is still headed toward “attempted murder,” but as more details emerge, they are also investigating “possible terrorist motives.
According to local media, the suspect is a local resident, the police have known this number in the past, but he was only involved in some minor crimes, including a small amount of marijuana smoking.
The extent of the suspect’s injuries was not immediately available, but police said they believe they were able to question him.
Reuters reported that the three patients with Life-threatening injuries are now in stable condition, while the other two are in serious condition.
