Illegal immigrants wait for a bus at a bus stop to meet their loved ones or sponsors in the Texas city of Brownsville, Texas, March 2.
Officials in a Texas city located on the U.S.-Mexico border confirmed that 108 illegal immigrants released to Texas by the Border Patrol since late January have tested positive for the Chinese Communist virus (Neocoronavirus) upon arrival.
Felipe Romero, a spokesman for the Texas city of Brownsville, said Wednesday (March 3) that the 108 positive individuals represent 6.3 percent of the total number of illegal immigrants who underwent rapid testing for the virus at the city’s main bus station, Fox News reported. There, they were released by the Border Patrol. Rapid testing of those individuals began Jan. 25.
He added that Brownsville has no authority to prevent illegal immigrants who test positive from traveling to other parts of the U.S., and recommended that they be quarantined and follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines for social distancing.
The city also told the news organization Noticias Telemundo Investiga that it is advising illegal immigrants who test positive to seek help from NGOs and nonprofit organizations in the area to find shelter and a place where they can be isolated from others. The local county-wide positivity rate is estimated at 13.8 percent.
Illegal immigrants will travel to different parts of the United States
Families of illegal immigrants who tested positive said they are waiting to travel to places like Maryland and New Jersey.
“On the way, we keep our masks on and wash our hands.” Eva Orellana, 29, from Honduras, told Noticias Telemundo Investiga. She came to the United States with her 3-year-old daughter.
She added that she was going to take a bus to North Carolina and had purchased a ticket.
“Really, I don’t feel any discomfort.” She said.
Miriam Izaguirre, 35, from Honduras, who also tested positive for the virus, told Noticias Telemundo Investiga that she plans to take a bus to Houston and is still waiting.
Senator Tom Cotton, a federal Republican, tweeted Tuesday (March 2) denouncing Biden‘s policies as creating a border crisis.
“President Biden bears full responsibility for the illegal immigration crisis at our southern border. Instead of welcoming illegal immigrants, the Biden Administration should focus on supporting American workers, especially during this global pandemic.” Cotton said.
In another tweet, Cotton questioned, “Why is the Biden administration suppressing public safety messages at a Time when open borders policies have triggered a surge in illegal immigration?”
On the eve of Biden’s inauguration, a large caravan of illegal Honduran immigrants attempted to break through the barriers of the countries they were passing through and push toward the United States. Cotton tweeted on Jan. 17 that Biden’s campaign promises triggered this massive influx of illegal immigrants. Biden promised to provide Amnesty to 11 million undocumented immigrants.
“During the presidential debates, Joe Biden promised mass amnesty and the rest of the globe took notice (of Biden’s promise).” Cotton said.
“Millions of Americans are without jobs. Yet Joe Biden wants to give legal status to millions of illegal immigrants, which will lower the wages of American workers and make it harder for them to find jobs.” Corden added.
Illegal immigration threatens to exacerbate border health crisis
Republican lawmakers on the House Oversight Committee issued a stark warning to the Biden administration last month that a health crisis at the southern border is imminent and that Biden’s “reckless” policies and rhetoric are exacerbating that crisis.
In a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, Oversight Committee Ranking Republican James Comer and 18 Oversight Committee members wrote: “The Biden administration’s policies to restrict enforcement of (illegal) immigration and weaken border security, coupled with proposals to grant amnesty to illegal immigrants, are a major obstacle to the implementation of the Biden administration’s policies. coupled with the proposal to grant amnesty to illegal immigrants, are signaling to the world that our immigration laws can be violated with minimal, if any, consequences.”
“We are particularly concerned that the Biden administration’s actions could soon lead to a health crisis at the border and in surrounding communities, resulting in widespread COVID-19 (Chinese Communist virus-induced pneumonia disease) infections and deaths.” The lawmakers said.
Republican lawmakers also warned that the number of illegal immigrant families and unaccompanied children will soon overwhelm border facilities in the midst of a Communist virus pandemic, forcing CBP (Customs and Border Protection) officials to seek a broader “catch and release “policy.
“The increase in illegal immigration at the southern border poses a risk not only to Border Patrol agents who apprehend illegal border crossers, but also to the communities into which these individuals will move – likely leading to widespread COVID-19 infections and deaths.” The lawmakers said.
