Pennsylvania U.S. Senator Pat Toomey, a Republican, voted to convict Trump in his impeachment case. Pennsylvania Republicans voted Monday (March 1) to pass a rebuke of Toomey.
The vote was 128 to 124, with 13 abstentions, to adopt a statement expressing displeasure with Senator Toomey.
In a statement sent out, the Pennsylvania Republican wrote: “We are outraged by Senator Toomey’s participation in an impeachment proceeding that has fueled Democrats’ relentless obsession with partisan political retribution.”
“Democrats’ use of impeachment as a political weapon sets a dangerous precedent in America, and Senator Toomey did not stand in their way.” In a statement, the Pennsylvania Republican added, “We oppose Senator (Toomey’s) actions in the strongest possible terms. We trust that voters will properly address public officials who have failed to satisfactorily represent the best interests of this country.”
Toomey is scheduled to retire in 2022. Last month, he was censured by York County (Pa.) Republicans. The York County Republican Committee said they condemned Toomey’s actions in the strongest possible terms for his failure to defend the Constitution and the freedoms it guarantees. The Republican Party in many counties, including Cambria, Lancaster, central Pennsylvania, much of rural northeastern Pennsylvania, regional counties in the northwest and Northampton County, has made resolutions condemning Toomey’s actions. Even Republicans in Chester County, where Democrats prevailed in the general election, passed a resolution condemning Toomey.
The resolution said, “Senator Toomey has violated the trust of his constituents. And ignored his responsibility to represent the Republican Party and the will of the people who elected him.” Many Republicans believe the trial of the former president is unconstitutional.
Toomey was one of seven Republican senators who voted with Democrats to convict Trump last month. Trump was accused of inciting a riot during the Jan. 6 incident at the Capitol, but was ultimately acquitted in a Senate impeachment trial.
Toomey said in a statement last month about his vote that he voted to convict Trump because he allegedly “urged the mob to march on the Capitol with the express purpose of preventing Congress and the vice president from officially certifying the (election) results.” But he did not provide examples.
So far, five of the seven Republican senators who voted to convict Trump have been censured by their state Republicans. Most of the House Republican lawmakers who voted to impeach Trump have also been censured by their state Republicans.
