U.S. Trade Agenda Report Released, Confirms Biden Team’s Attitude Toward Beijing

A new report from the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) shows that the Biden team will use “all available tools” to confront Beijing‘s unfair trade practices.

USTR released its “Biden Administration Trade Agenda for 2021 and Annual Report to Congress for 2020″ on January 1. The report outlines the new U.S. administration’s trade policy, but does not specify which tools the administration will use against Beijing.

The report cites a number of “harmful actions” by China, such as erecting trade barriers to restrict foreign access to the Chinese market, government-sanctioned forced labor programs, and unfair subsidies.

In addition, Beijing’s actions include restrictions on forced technology transfers, illegal access to and infringement of U.S. intellectual property, censorship of the internet and digital economy, and the fact that U.S. companies are treated less favorably in China than Chinese companies are treated in the same areas in the United States.

The report notes that the Biden administration will work with partners and allies to ensure that China meets its trade obligations. In addition, the U.S. will make it a “top priority” to address Beijing’s forced labor programs targeting Uighurs and other minority groups.

The report comes as Biden’s trade representative nominee, Katherine Tai, awaits a Senate vote on her appointment.
