U.S. father and son to be extradited for helping former Nissan chairman escape

Taylor father and son will be extradited to Japan for trial later.

An American father and son suspected of helping the former chairman of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, Mr. Ghosn, flee Japan were handed over to Japanese officials by the U.S. in Boston on Monday (1) and will be extradited to Japan for trial later.

The father, Michael Taylor, 60, served as a member of the U.S. Army Special Forces and later as a private security expert.

Michael Taylor and his son Peter Taylor, 27, said at their hearing against extradition that they feared unfair treatment and physical and psychological abuse if they were transferred to Japan, and that Japan had accused them of involvement in the case to save face after Koen’s escape. The Japanese side then said the escape was carefully planned. The U.S. Supreme Court last month rejected the two men’s application to refuse extradition.

The case was originally scheduled to go to trial last April, but he hid in a large black wooden box in December 2019 and was then transported on a private plane to Lebanon via Osaka Kansai Airport.
