The British newspaper The Times reports that coronavirus anal swab testing has become a mandatory procedure for entry into China. The newspaper says the Chinese government has decided to make anal swab testing a mandatory procedure because the method is more effective than nasal and throat swabs.
Special collection points have been set up at airports in Beijing and Shanghai. An article published on the French website Cnews4 describes how, to do an anal swab test, a 3- to 5-centimeter-long swab dipped in a salt solution is inserted into the anus and the sample is analyzed. Beijing authorities explain that it only takes 10 seconds.
Lu Hongzhou, a professor at the Shanghai Public health Clinical Center, said in an interview that stool testing by anal swab is more sensitive and accurate than testing by upper respiratory tract samples. Lu Hongzhou also said: anal swabs can also be replaced by stool sampling. Travelers can provide their own stool samples at the airport upon arrival if they wish.
South Korean Foreign Ministry spokesman Choi Young-sun has said that South Korean citizens entering China can submit fecal samples with their own hands without having to be sampled directly by quarantine personnel.
As previously reported, The Japanese government has asked Beijing not to do anal swab tests on Japanese citizens entering China, as such a practice would put psychological pressure on them.
