The first wave of the tsunami reached Kaipulanawe, and the New Zealand government revealed the extent of the tsunami’s impact, with a maximum 3-meter tsunami going straight to the North Island.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the New Zealand earthquake occurred at 2:27 a.m. local Time on the 5th, Richter scale 7.3, with a depth of only 10 kilometers, a very shallow earthquake, and the possibility of a tsunami.
The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) issued a tsunami warning for this earthquake, from Cape Runaway to the east coast of the North Island may be submerged by the tsunami, at 3:34 am local time on the 5th, the first wave of the tsunami has reached Cape Runaway, tsunami activity may last for several hours.
Officials are asking people to evacuate as instructed by the Civil Defence Department and not to approach the ocean. If people are asked to evacuate due to the Epidemic, do not insist on staying where you are. Officials have also released a map of the tsunami’s impact area and a 1m to 3m high tsunami is expected to occur on the North Island.
The New Zealand National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has asked people in coastal areas to immediately move to the nearest high ground, or as far away from the coast as possible, and move inland. Officials have issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas and stressed that the sea and land around the epicenter are within the warning area.
