Russia’s latest poll: 64% believe the new crown virus is a man-made biochemical weapon

The global outbreak of Wuhan pneumonia (novel coronavirus disease, COVID-19) continues to grow in popularity. A new survey by an independent pollster in Russia shows that 64% of Russians believe the new coronavirus is a biological weapon, while only 23% of respondents believe it is naturally occurring.

The latest survey conducted by the Levada Center, an independent Russian pollster, in March pointed out that more than half of Russians (56%) are not afraid of contracting Wuhan pneumonia, which is the highest rate since February 2020, while 43% are still afraid of being infected.

Only 28% of all respondents were not close to someone with Wuhan pneumonia, 17% were themselves or lived with someone with the disease, 22% had a non-resident relative with the disease, and 42% had a colleague or friend with the disease.

The majority of respondents (64%) believe that the novel coronavirus is a new man-made biochemical weapon, with only 23% believing that the virus is naturally occurring.

The survey was conducted by individual interview between February 18 and 24, 2021, among urban and rural residents of Russia aged 18 years or older, with a sample size of 1601 valid samples collected from 137 cities in Russia and a sampling error of ±1.5% at a confidence level of 95%.
