New protests against a coup by the military erupted in Myanmar on Wednesday (March 3, 2021), during which another person was killed in a crackdown by security forces.
Protesters released smoke at a demonstration site in Myanmar’s largest city, Yangon, in an attempt to block the view of security force snipers. Witnesses said one protester was killed and several were injured.
In Mandalay, the second largest city, two protesters were killed in clashes with security forces. Both men were killed by gunfire, witnesses and journalists covering the scene said
Last Sunday was the deadliest day in a month of mass protests against the military coup in Burma, with at least 18 protesters killed by security forces, at least dozens wounded and about 1,000 people arrested.
President Win Myint, who was sacked by the military, has just been added to two charges, including violating the constitution.
Earlier, sacked Myanmar de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi was also charged with additional charges of attempting to incite public disorder.
The U.S., several Western countries and the U.N. secretary-general have condemned the Burmese military’s violent crackdown on protesters and demanded that the junta release democratically elected civilian leaders such as Aung San Suu Kyi.
However, only four foreign ministers of ASEAN members urged the junta to release Aung San Suu Kyi and others when they met Tuesday to discuss the situation in Myanmar.
China’s foreign ministry on Monday said it was urgent to push for a cooling of the situation in Myanmar, but did not condemn the junta’s bloody crackdown on protesters or urge a return to a democratically elected government, but asked the international community to respect Myanmar’s sovereignty.
