In the southern Indian state of Telangana, a man was recently killed by a rooster with a knife tied to its foot as it prepared to compete in a competition. The rooster in question will be brought to court.

India Today reported on Feb. 27 that the victim, a 45-year-old Thanugulla Satish, was an organizer of an illegal cockfighting competition in the Indian state of Telangana.

Satish brought his rooster to the competition on Feb. 22. To win, he strapped a blade about 7.5 cm long to the rooster’s leg in advance. On the eve of the competition, the rooster tried to break free from the control. During this Time, the blade tied to the chicken’s leg pierced Satish’s groin.

According to local police officer B Jeevan, Satish began bleeding profusely after being stabbed in the groin, and he died of blood loss on his way to a hospital in Karimnagar district of Telangana.

Some Indian media said the cockerel in question had been “arrested” by police. Photos widely circulated on social media show the rooster being tied with a rope and pecking at grains at the police station.

In response, Officer Givan debunked the rumor, saying the rooster had neither been arrested nor detained. It was only briefly held at the local police station before being taken to a poultry farm. It is under police custody and will be taken to court as evidence at a later date.

Inspector Jiwan also said that the deceased Sadish was one of the 16 people who organized cockfighting betting matches in Lothunur village (Lothunur). Police are currently looking for 15 other people who organized the illegal cockfighting. They could face charges of manslaughter, illegal betting and illegally organizing cockfights.

In India, cockfighting was reportedly made illegal as far back as 1960. However, cockfighting is common in rural areas of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Odisha, especially around the Hindu festival of Sankranti.

Sankranti, also known as Makar Sankranti, which means “the power of the sun,” is one of the traditional Indian festivals.

Cockfighting is when roosters are kept with 7.5 cm long knives or blades tied to their legs and bets are made on who will win the fearsome battle. The fight continues until one of the participating roosters fights to death or escapes, and the other rooster is declared the winner.

Thousands of roosters die in the competition each year, which attracts large crowds despite the efforts of animal rights groups.

In India, this is not the first time someone has been killed by their own rooster. 2020, a man was killed in Andhra Pradesh, India, when he was stabbed in the neck with a blade tied to a rooster. The man was participating in a cockfighting competition with his rooster when the incident occurred.
