U.S. Trade Representative Nominee Dyche: Work closely with allies to support tariff policy on China

Katherine Tai, President Biden‘s trade representative nominee, appeared before Congress Thursday for confirmation hearings. Tai said she supports tariff measures as a “statutory tool” to ensure U.S. trade policy and will strengthen enforcement of existing trade agreements, including China’s.

Dyche told the U.S. Senate Finance Committee that Washington needs to pursue all options to push China to make the necessary structural adjustments to ensure a level playing field between the world’s two largest economies. She stressed that the reason China has become an extremely strong competitor is being direct government intervention in the economy. But the relevant commitments made by China must be honored and implemented, and the fulfillment of the U.S.-intermediate trade agreement will be her urgent preoccupation.

Dyche also noted that the forced labor issue has become the worst example of global trade, and she will make China’s use of forced labor in Xinjiang the focus of her work after taking office.

Dackey, who previously served as chief trade counsel for the U.S. House of Representatives fundraising committee, is said to have a calm and firm negotiating style and a deep understanding of China issues.
