In a joint statement today, the militaries of Pakistan and India pledged to stop all firing along the disputed cease-fire line in Kashmir after months of violent conflict between the two nuclear-armed rivals.
The two countries regularly exchange artillery and machine gun fire along the cease-fire line known as the Line of Control (LOC), which has separated the two countries for decades.
The statement said, “Both sides agreed to strictly abide by all agreements, memorandums of understanding and to cease firing along the Line of Control and all other areas starting at midnight.”
The statement announcement comes after months of clashes between the two sides, with the two countries exchanging accusations that the other was responsible for thousands of cease-fire violations over the past year.
The Pakistani military says about 1.7 million civilians live in areas along the line of control and are increasingly dependent on hundreds of bunkers for shelter in the frequent skirmishes.
