Wandering through the magical ancient building of the Adicus Concert Hall in Athens, Greece, one can marvel at the mastery of the ancient Greek architects in applying the principles of acoustics to architecture. The beautiful sound emanating from the stage of this semi-circular theater can be heard very clearly even if you sit in the last row. This semi-circular or circular building is the result of the elaborate design of the ancient European architects, which attracted the attention of designer James H. Smith (James H. Smith).
Creation inspired by ancient classical architecture
Smith is the founder of the Cartio design studio and an architectural photographer. Although he lives in New York City, he is fascinated by the old architecture of Europe, whether it is the ruins of the Greek Athenian squares, which bear witness to the changes of ancient civilizations, the profound Parthenon at the top of the Acropolis, or the neo-classical Chateau de Triannon, built by Louis XV in Versailles, France… …he was able to perceive a higher spiritual dimension of art in these spectacular sculptures and magnificent buildings.
Smith believes that classical architecture has a great mission, which blends proportions, rhythm, color, space, light, shape, and finishing touches to create architectural harmony and beauty that impresses the mind while allowing one to appreciate the art. As such, they embody the human environment of a semi-divine Culture, implicitly guiding people to follow the teachings of God in their lives.
Smith studied architecture before he was a sculptor with a solid background in painting and sculpture. At the same Time, he also mastered the basic elements of photography such as lines, tones, textures, shapes and colors by learning photography techniques to enhance his knowledge of design concepts. For he knew that a true architect must be proficient in the fundamentals of sketching, drawing and sculpture.
Smith deeply appreciated that traditional schools systematically taught orthodox aesthetics to create truly beautiful art that brings pleasure. The architecture that can be found everywhere in continental Europe is the embodiment of elegance, delicacy and refinement, which seem to communicate with the mind and lead one to do the will of God.
Away from the impatience and inner peace, appreciate the different charm of ancient architecture
He was fundamentally changed by his exposure to and experience of Falun Gong, an ancient practice of Chinese origin. This gentle and soothing gong method not only healed the fractures in his back, straightened his limbs, and improved his sleep, but more importantly, Falun Gong purified his mind, gradually eliminating his inner restlessness and replacing it with tranquility, making his mind infinitely more open without distractions. When the haze cleared, his creative inspiration came like a spring, and he was able to capture more beautiful scenery.
When he traveled to Italy and saw the gorgeous and noble limestone buildings in the square, what he felt was not luxury, but an elegant beauty. Because in a calm state of mind, the charm of classical architecture could strike straight to his soul.
So he became a neoclassical designer. He attributed this feeling to the practice, through which he gained inner peace and could slow down and appreciate the beauty of simplicity and simplicity. He perceived that tradition creates a noble, upright and dignified living environment, awakening people’s true nature and enlightening them to be their true selves. He also realized that the process of creating his designs is the process of communication between man and God.
