Former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo questioned the Biden administration’s foreign policy on Newsmax TV on Monday (Feb. 22). He said that because China and Iran are dictatorial regimes that only buy into the power of the strong, the United States must not show weakness to them.
Pompeo spoke of his desire to give the Biden Administration “every opportunity to do it right,” but also worried that Biden was “about to throw away everything [the Trump administration’s] gains on some issues …… and get almost nothing back. ” And authoritarian regimes such as the Chinese Communist Party and Iran only recognize who is strong.
He is particularly worried about U.S. policy toward the Middle East and the Chinese Communist Party, especially Iran. He said the Biden administration announced plans to rejoin the infamous Iran Nuclear Deal when Trump was purposely withdrawing from it.
Pompeo said, “But what I’ve seen and what I’ve heard so far suggests that this (Biden) administration has a confused understanding of the successes that we’ve had before.” “When you’re tough, when you’re strong, you can build deterrence, and then it’s possible to protect American freedom.”
He also talked about, “Because whether it’s China (Communist), Iran, or terrorists or terrorist groups from other parts of the world, they just look at strength. They know the leader of the United States (Trump), and he’s preparing every day to take the right steps to ensure the freedom of the United States …… And I hope that this administration doesn’t say, ‘Well, this was done by another administration,’ and just throw away all the accomplishments of the Trump Administration and throw away the previous successes away.”
Pompeo is proud of the Abraham Accords in the Middle East, which allowed for the negotiation of peaceful trade agreements between Israel and the Arab states of Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates. The agreement’s explicit goal was to bring moderate Sunni Muslim states into a coalition and isolate Shiite Iran.
But Pompeo believes the Biden administration’s move could undermine much of the previous work the U.S. has done in the Middle East. I do worry that the current administration wants to go out and soothe the Iranian regime, wants to embrace them intimately and appease them,” he said. And all of that could bring danger to the Middle East. When you bring danger to the Middle East, countries don’t have the heart to think about doing the right thing every day.”
“That’s why President Trump has quickly pursued a strategy, an effort, and a plan that puts real pressure on that (Iranian) regime. And now they (the Biden administration) will throw away all of those strategies in exchange for what appears to be almost nothing.”
Pompeo also said he was frustrated that Biden last week dismissed the persecution of Uighurs and ethnic minorities by the Chinese Communist Party as a “culturally normative difference. He said even the new secretary of state, Tony Blinken, agreed with the previous administration’s decision to define the CCP’s treatment of Uighurs as “genocide.
“The disgusting forced abortions, the forced sterilizations that are going on there …… are real tragedies …… And it involves not just the Uighurs, but all of China’s minorities,” Pompeo said, “and when I see President Biden make this statement, it’s really disheartening to see someone who treats that kind of violence as a difference or a difference in cultural norms.” “What’s happening here is a fundamental violation of basic human rights. The world has a responsibility to stand up and speak out, and the United States has done that under President Trump’s leadership.”
Pompeo concluded by saying that people will soon see the difference in this administration’s approach to religious beliefs and human rights from the previous administration, but that is one thing that everyone has a right to do – to practice their right of conscience, to practice their faith.
