Vaccines have never been a crisis of confidence

“Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor took the lead yesterday in receiving the Chinese Kexin vaccine. The Kexing vaccine, which could not get its Phase III clinical data into international medical journals, suddenly “grabbed the gate” before the German BioNTech vaccine came to Hong Kong, and turned into a political tirade of “gratitude”. Admittedly, it is better for Lam to “try out the vaccine with his own body” than for those who are “the most physically honest” and say they are patriotic but want to get foreign products, but the real question is, who is it that keeps politicizing simple scientific issues? Why do we have to “thank the central government” even for vaccination?

What is the purpose of vaccination? Government expert adviser Xu Shuchang said earlier that the vaccination is to reduce the risk of symptoms, not to prevent infection with Wuhan pneumonia; and the Department of health issued a draft late at night on the 20th, saying that the vaccine has limited effect in preventing the virus, and there are restrictions on supply, which cannot achieve group protection in the short term; Xue Da, clinical assistant professor in the Department of Microbiology of the University of Hong Kong, pointed out earlier that the efficiency of the Kexing vaccine is only 50.65%, which will drag down the group Immunity; that is, the more people get the Coxin vaccine, the more people need to be vaccinated! This is simple scientific figures, not “politicization”.

However, the SAR Government has been turning a blind eye to the queries of the public and even the experts on the Coxin vaccine, and Lam Cheng continues to accuse the public of listening to “false rumors”. Why is there “untruth” but not clarified? What the public clearly see is that a number of doctors and experts have questioned the effectiveness of Kexing, and even claimed that they would only choose BioNTech vaccine. The more the government “thanked the Central Government” and politicized the choice of BioNTech, the lower the confidence of the public. People will only ask: If the vaccine that failed to be published in international journals did not come from China, do you think the government would have approved it on a “special case” basis?

The foreign media even reported that some Chinese employees posted overseas (e.g. Serbia in Europe or Africa) still contracted Wuhan pneumonia after receiving the vaccine from China National Pharmaceuticals. When the effectiveness of the vaccine becomes not just a scientific issue, but a political face-saving issue, the result is the same as a year ago – any appeal, suggestion, hope that China can deal with the virus pragmatically becomes “ulterior motives”, “disinformation”, “disinformation”, “disinformation” and “disinformation”. “And the more the government deals with the problem in this way, the greater the crisis of confidence it creates, and even if there is a third truth, it will be taken as a total lie; even if there is a 50 percent efficiency, it will be taken as a 10 percent failure. A proverb circulating in the West: Never Believe Anything Until It Is Officially Denied, is a reflection of today’s government.

Anxiety travels Dukes worse credibility

Another real-Life example of the government’s confidence crisis is the “MyTravel” program, which a large number of citizens have boycotted. Yesterday, even the netizens revealed that the truth of the recent surge in downloads is that the program, which can only be used in Hong Kong, has become the number one downloaded health program in African, Caribbean and Pacific countries such as Cape Verde, Bermuda and even Fiji, which is a miracle in Hong Kong’s IT industry and the greatest creation ever made by the TDC!

When the number of tourists in Hong Kong has dropped by 99%, and tourists from all over the world are unable to visit Hong Kong, travel with peace of mind has become the most downloaded App in these countries. This also explains why a large number of people would rather queue up at restaurants to fill in their names and phone numbers than to use the MileagePlus app, as they would rather trust the restaurant owners and staff than the government. This is the last nail in the coffin for the government’s credibility, which has hit rock bottom.

Many people in the IT sector pointed out that foreign countries would make the source code of the program public if they wanted to strengthen the confidence of the people. The Secretary for Innovation and Technology, Eugene Sit, has refused to disclose the source code on the grounds that it respects intellectual property rights – wasn’t it bought back by the government through a tender? Can’t it be written in the tender requirements that the original code should be disclosed? This kind of excuse, which no one believes, will only make the public even more distrustful. The government has to add more features to the program that violate privacy, such as automatic Bluetooth scanning for registration, which will only make fewer people use it. Instead of solving the confidence problem, the government is responsible for doing the opposite.
