“Shanghai rights activist Gu Guoping was taken away by police and his whereabouts are unknown

On the eve of the two sessions of the Chinese People’s Congress and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), authorities have stepped up their efforts to maintain stability, according to a Feb. 23 release from Minsheng Watch, a Chinese civil rights organization. Shanghai rights activist Gu Guoping was suddenly taken away by the police and his current whereabouts are unknown.

According to reports, Shanghai rights activist Gu Guoping arrived in Beijing last week after successfully escaping surveillance by community members guarding his Home, but had to return to Shanghai due to a diabetic attack. On Friday, local police demanded that Gu be taken to a “resort” and placed under house arrest for a month. Gu Guoping and his wife argued with the police, holding them responsible for the consequences of the diabetic attack, and they were temporarily withdrawn.

But on Feb. 20, Gu Guoping was suddenly taken to a police car near his home. Before he was taken away, Gu Guoping said, “There were four or five police officers and two security guards, and a criminal detention order was issued, and both cell phones were confiscated. He denounced the authorities for not needing a reason to arrest people. It is reported that Gu Guoping was on his way to the police station, but then his phone was never answered.

“According to Minsheng Watch, Gu Guoping suffers from severe diabetes and was just discharged from the hospital half a month ago, and is still in pain from the three ribs he broke by the police. The authorities are holding Gu Guoping in custody with a medical condition, and details of the reasons for his detention, its length and specific location are unknown.
