U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) ended his trip to Mexico early to return to Texas, which was hit hard by the winter storm, to do his part.
On Saturday (Feb. 20), Cruz returned from his trip to Cancun and began busily delivering water to people in need.
In photos posted online, Cruz was seen carrying water and placing it in his vehicle. The congressman can also be seen learning about the disaster from people who drove up to get water.
Bottled water distribution has become a common scenario in Texas in recent days. The state has just experienced a historic winter storm that has overstressed the power grid and left millions without power; pipes have broken and water supplies are in trouble.
Cruz shared a post from the city of Austin in a tweet telling people that the city was distributing nearly 11,000 cases of water to critical facilities and vulnerable people.
The next day, Cruz was busy serving Houston barbecue to firefighters, reporters and law enforcement officers, thanking them for their work during the storm.
Last week, Cruz was criticized by some for taking a plane to Cancun, Mexico, for a vacation while Texas was experiencing bad weather.
Cruz flew back the next day.
He said the flight to Mexico was to spend Time with his two daughters. Since school had been closed for a week, the daughters wanted to take a trip with their friends.
When he returned, he said the trip was “clearly a mistake.
“I wouldn’t do it again if I were starting over.” Cruz said he was just trying to be a good dad.
“When you have two daughters who have been freezing for two days, there’s no heat, there’s no electricity. They said, ‘Hey, look, we don’t have school to go to, let’s get out of here.'”
The furore over the trip began with a photo – a man who looked like Cruz was at the airport. United insiders leaked information about Cruz’s trip.
United is conducting an investigation into the leak of customer information.
Members of both parties have accused Cruz of flying out of Texas at this moment, and some Democrats have called for his resignation.
