China buys barley: rejected Australia’s and bought more Argentina’s

China imposed an 80.5% tariff on Australian barley last year due to diplomatic tensions. China is looking elsewhere amid a long diplomatic standoff with Australia, traditionally its largest supplier. Argentina’s Barley Exports to China Set to Soar to Record 1 Million Tons in 2021

Argentina’s barley exports to China are expected to hit a record high of 1 million tons this year, according to a Reuters report today that says China and Australia are at odds. Argentina’s barley exports to China are set to soar to a record 1 million tons in 2021. Today’s sales boom highlights the fact that Argentina, a major South American grain country, is closing the supply gap caused by the aforementioned tariffs, according to industry sources in Argentina and China.

Export declarations filed with Argentina’s agriculture ministry show that 1.1 million tons of barley have been exported so far this year, and traders say almost all of it has gone to China, the world’s second-largest economy. A Chinese source said Argentina is expected to export at least 900,000 tons of barley to China in 2021, and the actual amount could be higher.

Other countries benefiting from China’s demand for barley include France, Canada and Ukraine, according to Reuters.
