Interview with Kelly Shackelford: Religious Freedom and Government Restrictions in the Wake of the Epidemic

In a recent interview, Shackelford, president of the First Liberty Society, a nonprofit legal organization, said that government restrictions on religion during the Epidemic are a violation of the fundamental right to freedom of religion.

Kelly Shackelford, president of First Liberty: “We’re actually in a battle over whether the government can control our houses of worship.”

Kelly Shackelford, president of First Liberty: “When movie theaters are open, bowling alleys are open, strip clubs are open, there are 3,000 people attending basketball games. But you don’t let 12 kids from a small Christian school, meet in a school room. That’s unconscionable, that’s discrimination, that’s a violation of our most basic rights.”

“Kelly Shackelford, president and executive director of First Liberty, said it is vital to protect and defend religious freedom, and that if religious freedom is violated, all other freedoms are not guaranteed.

Kelly Shackelford, president of First Liberty: “The Founding Fathers put religious liberty in the first two articles of the First Amendment, and they called it our first freedom for a reason. They understood that if you lose religious liberty, you lose all liberty.”

The U.S. Supreme Court on Jan. 25 denied a Nevada church’s request to suspend a restraining order on places of worship in the state. Last Dec. 15 and Nov. 25, the Supreme Court also struck down restrictions against places of worship in New Jersey, Colorado and New York during the outbreak.

Kelly Shackelford said he has seen the Trump administration do more for religious freedom than any previous administration.

Kelly Shackelford, president of First Liberty: “It started with signing executive orders on religious freedom. Then the Department of Justice created a special division to protect religious freedom, to go to all agencies and make sure that they have guidelines as federal departments and agencies that understand the need to protect religious freedom.”

Kelly Shackelford believes that after Biden‘s inauguration, many anti-religious liberty-minded people entering the government and the power structure will use federal government power to push a very different philosophy.

Kelly Shackelford, president of First Liberty: “Groups (in the Trump Administration) have very different ideas and beliefs about human sexuality, how God created people, what’s appropriate, what’s moral and what fits their religious beliefs. And the (Biden) administration will have a very different set of beliefs.”

Kelly Shackelford said Americans with religious beliefs who are willing to stand up are not only regaining freedom for themselves, but are fighting for freedom for millions of others and for the future of America.

Kelly Shackelford, president of First Liberty: “I see more Americans who are unwilling to submit to having their freedoms taken away. That inspires me to believe in the future of this country.”
