Chinese cargo ship explodes in Gibraltar waters, 4 crew members injured

Spanish media reported that at around 9 p.m. local Time on the 19th, an explosion occurred in Gibraltar waters aboard the cargo ship “Cape Town” from mainland China. Sources said the cargo ship was loaded with coal from the U.S. port of Baltimore and was destined for Port Said, Egypt. The explosion occurred in the foredeck area of the cargo ship.

The explosion has injured four crew members, two of whom have been taken to the country’s Seville hospital for treatment, while the other two are being treated locally in Gibraltar, the report said.

According to reports, the ship is flying the flag of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Gibraltar police have been involved in the investigation of the cause of the explosion of the cargo ship, but it is not clear the cause of the explosion.
