Canadian Conservatives submit motion on Chinese Communist Party’s genocide policy

Michael Chong, a Canadian Conservative foreign affairs commentator, tabled a motion asking the House of Commons to formally declare the Chinese Communist government’s oppressive policies against the Uighur people in Xinjiang an act of genocide.

He said Canada has historically defended human rights and condemned South Africa’s apartheid policies before other Western countries. Now Canada should not shirk its responsibility either.

The motion was supported by members of the Bloc Québécois, the New Democratic Party and the Green Party. A Bloc Quebecois MP changed the motion to include a call for the IOC to relocate the 2022 Winter Olympics.

Canadian Foreign Minister Marc Garneau said his government is keeping a close eye on the situation of Uighurs in Xinjiang and will act with allies. This comes after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada condemns the Chinese Communist government’s human rights abuses in Xinjiang. But genocide is a serious term that should not be used lightly.

Currently, among Canada’s allies, only the United States officially refers to the CCP government’s policies and actions in Xinjiang as genocide and Crimes Against Humanity.
