Japan’s leading auto parts manufacturer, Aurora Brake Industries, Inc. announced on the 16th that more than 114,000 items of its product quality inspection data were falsified, including falsification. Of these, approximately 5,000 items did not meet the standard values agreed upon with the automaker.
Aurora Brakes also announced that the falsifications date back to at least 2001, a span of about 20 years. The counterfeiting incident affected a number of Japanese car companies, including Toyota and Nissan. Toyota is its largest shareholder, with a stake of more than 11 percent.
According to the response of the person in charge of Aurora Brake’s headquarters in Japan, the parts involved involved 10 Japanese car companies, but the specific names are not publicly available. In addition, he said that the car companies involved in the re-examination, are of the opinion that there is no problem with the performance of the product, so Shuguang Brake and the relevant car companies currently have no plans to recall.
According to Aurora Brake Industries, in June 2018, the management team, discovered that certain brake parts produced at the Yamagata Prefecture plant, had been falsified with inspection data.
Subsequently, an investigation of all plants in Japan revealed that falsified data was also found for brake parts manufactured at four plants in Yamagata, Fukushima, Saitama and Okayama, resulting in the discovery of a total of 114,271 cases of falsification.
The fraud had been committed for about 20 years, and 4,931 of the cases did not meet the standards required by customers for their cars.
Aurora Brake Industries said it will take thorough measures to prevent the recurrence of data falsification, such as checking data at its headquarters.
