First case of death! Myanmar protests 19-year-old girl shot dead

Burma’s military coup d’état has sparked anger among the people, who have taken to the streets for four consecutive days in protest.

Myanmar police used force to disperse the protesters on the 9th, 19-year-old woman Ma Mya Thwet Thwet Khine was shot in the head. Family members confirmed that she died at 11:05 this morning (19), becoming the first protester to be confirmed dead since the coup on the first of this month.

The Burmese military launched a coup against the elected government of the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) on Feb. 1, citing “election fraud,” including Ung San Suu Kyi, President Win Myint, and the president. President Win Myint was arrested by the military and the country was declared a one-year state of emergency.

Ma Mya Thwet Thwet Khine was demonstrating in the capital Naypyidaw on the 9th. After the police used water cannons to disperse the people, they shot into the air and fired rubber bullets, causing four people, including Ma Mya Thwet Thwet Khine, to be injured and sent to the hospital.

Ma Mya Thwet Thwet Khine’s helmet was pierced by a bullet and he fell to the ground. Today, her brother Ye Htut Aung confirmed that she had died at 11:05 a.m., making her the first protester to be confirmed dead since the coup on the first of the month.

Protesters have now begun to remember Mya Thwet Thwet Khine as a hero.
