Experts warned that the global shortage of chips caused by a combination of demand driven by the new coronary pneumonia (Chinese communist virus) outbreak, supply chain disruptions and the U.S.-China trade war could lead to higher prices for popular electronics such as the game console PlayStation or Apple iPhone.
AFP reports that since the outbreak, people forced to stay at Home have gone on a shopping spree online, including buying new screens, computers and tablets, each of which requires a chip to function.
In this wave of global tight supply of chips, the automotive industry has become the most high-profile victims, Ford, Fuchs and other auto makers have been forced to cut production. But this shortage problem seems to be spreading to other kinds of electronic products.
Consultant Strategy Analytics executive director Mawston (Neil Mawston) said: “The disruption caused by the Epidemic, the accumulated inventory caused by the trade war, and the rise in demand for devices needed to work from home, these factors together form the perfect storm, is causing chip shortages. Any commodity with chips will be affected, from cars, smartphones, game consoles, tablets to notebooks. Electronics and cars will be in reduced supply or upwardly priced for the entire year.”
The report points out that the sales of certain iPhone models are known to have been restricted because specific parts are unavailable, and Sony’s new game console PlayStation 5 and Microsoft’s new-generation Xbox are understood to be in short supply because of chip shortages.
