Burma’s civil disobedience military angers show business, movie star director and 6 others wanted for “inciting protests

The actor has won four Myanmar Film Academy Awards for Best Actor in 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Burma’s civil disobedience movement erupted after a coup on Feb. 1. The military is angry with sympathetic celebrities, including film directors Wyne, Lu Min, Ko Pauk and Na Gyi, four-Time Burmese Oscar winner Pyay Ti Oo and singer Anagga, who are wanted for “inciting people to join the protest. Nearly 500 people have been arrested so far in the region, with a maximum sentence of two years in prison. On the other hand, mass street protests continued in Yangon on Thursday to express discontent with the military coup.

In Yangon, Myanmar’s largest city, and Mandalay, the second largest city, people continued to protest in the streets, and local media said people were injured. In Mandalay there, railway workers responded to civil disobedience to stop the train from moving. Reuters said that the military security forces had shot at workers involved in the strike with rubber bullets, at least one person was injured. Similar civil disobedience also affected the operation of other government departments, the initiators are mostly health care workers, and a number of civil servants involved.

There were also demonstrations in the capital Naypyidaw, including many bank employees and engineers. Nearly a few thousand people reportedly participated in the demonstrations, which also called for the release of elected government officials by the military.

All of the celebrities wanted by the Burmese military government are powerful actors and actresses. Among them, four-time actor Petio has won the Myanmar Film Academy Award for Best Actor four times in 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2014 respectively. Director Vine participated in the 25th Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Film Festival in China in 2016 with his film Made with Love. Director and actor Lu Min said on his Facebook page, “It’s really amazing to see the people united. Definitely return the political power to the people.”
