The United States announced Wednesday the indictment of three North Koreans accused of conducting a series of large-scale cyber attacks on businesses and financial institutions, specifically targeting the cryptocurrency sector, involving a total aggregate amount of about $1.3 billion, affecting banks and movie production companies.
The indictment by federal prosecutors alleges that the three North Koreans were involved in multiple criminal activities and cyber attacks, including hacking into Sony Pictures, on the grounds that the film company had produced a set of movies titled “The Assassination of Kim Jong-un. They are also suspected of hacking into a number of banks in South Asia, Southeast Asia, Mexico and Africa, installing malware in an attempt to seize information from cryptocurrency users. The three North Korean Hackers are also suspected of being involved in the creation of the ransomware WannaCry.
According to the indictment filed in Los Angeles court, the three cyberattack suspects are affiliated with North Korea’s military intelligence system, which has launched cyberattack operations that have drawn attention.
The FBI believes that the three suspects are in North Korea and have traveled to countries including China and Russia.
