Navarro: Republicans Must Advance Trump’s Priorities

Former White House trade and industry adviser Peter Navarro.

Former Trump adviser Peter Navarro said this week that the Republican Party must move forward with Trump’s priorities and not go back to the “old future.

“Donald J. Trump’s success is really based on his ability to transform the Republican Party into the party of blue-collar Americans, the party of the working class, the party of union members who don’t take orders from the big bosses, who voted for Trump.” Trade expert Navarro said on Steve Bannon’s “War Room.

But Trump lost in the 2020 election. Some top Republicans, including Senate Republican leader Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, said the party should “outflank” Trump.

Navarro said that would be a mistake, effectively ignoring the fact that the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement that Trump helped form has become a political force.

McConnell and others want to return to “the old future of Republicanism, dedicated to tax cuts and deregulation, while ignoring the fundamentals of the MAGA movement and Trump, which are fair trade, an end to endless wars, and border security.” Navarro said.

“If he thinks he can go back to that (the old future) and turn his back on the 74 million MAGA Americans who voted for Trump, he’s basically given the Republican Party a losing shot.”

McConnell and House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy of California did not respond to requests for comment.

This past weekend, McConnell voted to acquit Trump in his impeachment trial. He then criticized Trump, saying he was to blame for the Jan. 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol and accusing him of election fraud.

Trump responded with a strong statement, accusing McConnell of “never (doing) what was required of him or what was good for our country.”

“Where necessary and appropriate, I will endorse key contenders who support ‘Make America Great Again’ (MAGA) and ‘America First’ policies. We need brilliant, strong, thoughtful and compassionate leaders.” Trump said.

Current and former advisers say Trump is committed to helping Republicans take back the House and Senate in the 2022 midterm elections.

Navarro told Bannon that he hopes to work over the next year and a half to put in place a replacement for McConnell. McConnell became Senate Republican leader in 2007 and was re-elected last year to continue as the top Republican leader in Congress.
