New York Governor Cuomo has been in trouble recently after a two-hour recording revealed that he concealed the true number of deaths at a nursing Home, and Cuomo was condemned by both parties. As the New York nursing home scandal continues to burn, New York City Mayor Michael White, also a Democrat, has called for a thorough investigation of the issue, while House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has expressed dissatisfaction with Cuomo’s previous demands for Epidemic relief money.
In a radio interview last weekend, New York City Mayor Michael White pointed the finger at Cuomo, saying that what happened in New York State is very disturbing and must be fully investigated, according to Fox News. White said, “We have to know exactly what happened here and make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
It was recently revealed that Cuomo ordered New York State nursing homes to accept 9,000 hospital-confirmed patients at the beginning of the outbreak, with the consequence that a large number of elderly people in nursing homes became infected and died, and many nursing home residents were transferred to hospitals for treatment and then died of illness, but these deaths were intentionally not counted in the death toll for fear of being pursued by the Justice Department under the Trump administration.
Cuomo is also currently under pressure from a judicial lawsuit for covering up the death toll. Rep. Stefani said, “Cuomo, the secretary of state and his senior team must be prosecuted immediately.”
On top of that, Pelosi recently expressed dissatisfaction with Cuomo’s previous attempts to obtain more federal bailout money.
Cuomo released his budget plan for fiscal year 2022 on Jan. 19, which mentions that New York State has a $15 billion financial shortfall due to the epidemic and that whether the new fiscal year budget will increase taxes or cut government services depends on the amount of money the new federal government gives to the state.
Cuomo added that if the federal government does not provide enough of the $15 billion bailout to help balance the New York State budget, “a lawsuit will be filed.” He hopes that Senate Majority Leader Schumer and House Speaker Pelosi will help New York State.
According to the Times Union, House Speaker Pelosi publicly denied Cuomo’s request and said Congress has provided enough “enthusiastic assistance” to address New York’s concerns.
In a Feb. 11 letter to New York congressional Democrats, Pelosi said New York State has actually received nearly $70 billion in relief to support the health, financial security and well-being of its people.
The Biden administration has proposed a $1.9 trillion “American Rescue Plan,” of which approximately $350 billion would be provided to state capitals as aid, and the plan is still under consideration by Congress.
