Police shoot to suppress demonstrators in Myanmar’s capital Naypyidaw on Feb. 9.
Burma’s military government recently broke the network and sent armored vehicles to patrol, the international community called on the military restraint. On Tuesday (16), a number of videos of the Burmese army’s forceful crackdown on people began to circulate online.
According to the BBC, gunfire has been heard several times over the past few days in Myitkyina, the capital of Kachin State in northern Myanmar. Military personnel can be seen in the streets of several cities, including Yangon.
Video released by the BBC shows gunshots being fired at night in Myitkyina as people shout and run for cover. The video also shows a series of gunshots like popping beans, which netizens suspect could be anti-personnel weapons.
The situation in Myanmar continues to be tense, with gunfire heard repeatedly in the city of Myitkyina over the past few days. The presence of military personnel can be seen on the streets of many cities in Myanmar, including Yangon.

People in Myitkyina went to demonstrate outside a power plant on Sunday night, believing the military was trying to cut off electricity, and were dispersed by military fire, Radio Free Asia reported. Some people reported on social media that soldiers fired more than 40 shots, all with live ammunition. Others claimed that soldiers fired tear gas canisters.
Another video posted online also shows protesting people running and calling out in the night amid gunfire.

There is also a video from an unknown location taken during the day showing riot police first being pushed back by protesters, then firing intensively to counterattack and retake their positions. The video shows the suspected use of non-lethal riot guns by police.

Some Chinese netizens have lamented that the Burmese military government is starting to follow the same path as China’s June 4 massacre. One netizen said, “The Burmese military government has been backed up by the Chinese (Communist) government for years, and it has followed the same example.
At about 1 a.m. local Time Monday, Myanmar authorities began a nationwide Internet shutdown. The European Union, together with the embassies of 13 countries in Myanmar, including the United Kingdom and Canada, issued a joint statement calling on Myanmar’s military and police not to commit violence against protesters and civilians.
