Canada’s opposition party: China should not host the Winter Olympics

Canada‘s main opposition Conservative Party on Tuesday urged the Trudeau government to pressure the International Olympic Committee to cancel Beijing‘s right to host the Winter Olympics because of the genocide China committed against millions of Uighurs in Xinjiang.

Conservative Party leader Erin O’Toole said Canada should not ignore the genocide and must take a stand on it. But he said Canada does not need to do it alone, but should work with its closest allies.

O’Toole also said China is creating a “police state” in Hong Kong and has detained two Canadians for no apparent reason, while Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has yet to say whether the Canadian government will pressure the International Olympic Committee or consider not sending its athletes to the Winter Games.

British Foreign Minister Raab said last October that Britain “may” boycott the Beijing Winter Olympics. Earlier this month, more than 180 organizations from the global human rights movement issued a joint open letter calling on countries to commit to a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics so as not to contribute to China’s egregious human rights abuses.
