Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, in a recent interview with Japanese media, pointed out his intention to urge Japan and the European Union to persuade U.S. President Joe Biden to lift economic sanctions against Iran as soon as possible in order to resume the U.S.-Iranian dialogue and return to the “Iran nuclear deal”. It is understood that Japan and South Korea have been ordered to freeze nearly $10 billion of Iranian assets under U.S. sanctions.
Japan’s Mainichi Shimbun reported on the 16th that Chariff, in an exclusive interview with Kyodo News on the 14th, called Japan an “old friend” of Iran and friendly relations with the United States, expecting Japan to play the role of a friend to help convince the United States to lift sanctions against Iran, “the United States violates international law, Japan should advise the United States. The United States is in violation of international law, Japan should advise the United States, Japan will not implement (the United States) illegal decision”.
The government of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had proposed a “barter” of Iranian Crude Oil and U.S. grain, trying to play the role of intermediary.
Chariff also called on The Japanese government to release Iranian assets frozen in the Japanese banking system under U.S. sanctions. It is understood that Iran’s frozen assets in Japan and South Korea are close to $10 billion, mainly from oil exports, and the Japanese portion is estimated at nearly $3 billion. Chariff stressed that the returned funds will be used to purchase medical supplies and Food, including the Wuhan pneumonia vaccine.
As for the EU, Chariff advocated the establishment of a framework to lift U.S. sanctions and correct Iran’s violations of the Iran nuclear deal in a phased manner, in consultation with the U.S. and Iran, and Iran has conveyed this idea to the EU at the transactional level.
The Biden Administration has not been active in lifting sanctions, and “Biden must now make a decision” to abandon the Trump administration’s line of pressure and take concrete action on lifting sanctions, Chariff reiterated.
