British Prime Minister Johnson said the world needs a pandemic treaty to ensure transparency, according to a Reuters report. British Prime Minister Johnson was speaking at a news conference on Monday when he said he wanted a global treaty on pandemics in which countries agree to share data. Asked by Reuters what action he would like to take to improve transparency, Johnson said, “I think what the world needs to see is a universal agreement on how we track data on zoonotic pandemics…We want a common agreement on transparency.” Johnson said, “I think one of the attractive ideas we’ve seen in the last few months is a proposal for a global pandemic treaty so that signatories make sure they’re contributing all the data they have so that we can get a thorough understanding of what happened and stop it from happening again.”
Johnson said, “It’s the sensible thing to do.”
Reuters said both the U.K. and the U.S. expressed concern about the information situation that the World Health Organization (WHO) New Coronavirus Traceability Expert Group was allowed to access during its mission to China.
European Council President Charles Michel tweeted that he welcomed “Johnson’s support for working together on a pandemic treaty that will improve global preparedness, resilience and recovery.”
According to the report, Johnson wants to lead the global pandemic strategy, including the establishment of an early warning mechanism, because of the British presidency of the Group of Seven (G7). G7 leaders will meet on Friday.
British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said Sunday he shares U.S. concerns about the level of access to information about WHO’s investigation in China. Johnson has said he supports U.S. President Joe Biden‘s call for more information about the investigation to be released.
Asked by Reuters who he thought was responsible for the lack of transparency in information about the source of the New crown outbreak, Johnson said, “I think it’s clear that most of the evidence seems to indicate that the outbreak originated in Wuhan.” Johnson added, “So I think we all need to know as much as we can about what might be going on, the zoonotic issues that people are asking about. I think we need as much information as we can get.”
