Lawyer: Aung San Suu Kyi was added a new charge

Myanmar police have filed a new charge against military ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Aung San Suu Kyi’s lawyer told local media Tuesday (Feb. 16, 2021) that Aung San Suu Kyi is accused of violating the country’s natural disaster law. Earlier, she was accused of illegally importing radio walkie-talkies. A court hearing on the matter is scheduled for March 1.

Myanmar’s military staged a coup on Feb. 1, placing Aung San Suu Kyi and several top government and political party officials under house arrest or in detention. Military leaders say last November’s election was fraudulent, but Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) party has never offered a reasonable explanation that the military took over the government to perpetuate democracy and claimed it would hand over power to the winner of a general election a year later. The National League for Democracy-led government has denied allegations of election fraud.

For more than a week, mass demonstrations and protests have erupted across Myanmar against the military takeover and demanding that the junta release Aung San Suu Kyi. Authorities have cracked down on the protests and arrested many people.

The U.S. and other Western countries have urged the Burmese military to exercise restraint, refrain from using force against protesters, and release political activists who have been arrested.
