Rep. Mike Johnson (R-Texas) believes impeachment is an attempt by Democrats to frame 75 million Trump supporters as rioters, Breitbart News reports.
In an interview with Breitbart News host Joel Pollak on Sunday, Rep. Mike Johnson (D-Mich.) said Democrats used their impeachment effort against former President Trump to try to “equate” the 75 million Americans who voted for Trump with the “hundreds of criminals who ransacked the Capitol.
Johnson said the Democrats’ “ultimate goal of impeachment” is to compare Trump supporters to congressional rioters.
Johnson said, “They really want to use impeachment as a tool because they want to equate the tens of millions of Trump voters and all of his supporters and all of the people who came to the rallies, they want to equate all of those people with the hundreds of criminals who came in and ransacked the Capitol.” .
Moderator Pollack asked about the future of impeachment.
Johnson speculated that the congressional majority may use impeachment more frequently as a political tool.
Johnson said, “You’re lowering the standards [for impeachment] now. You’ve weaponized it, you’ve turned it into a political weapon to be used by the majority party against a president they don’t like. You’ve opened a Pandora’s box, and we may never be able to close it again.”
Impeachment that targets former public officials is unconstitutional, commented Johnson, who recalled his legal background as a constitutional lawyer for 20 years.
Johnson said, “The whole trial is unconstitutional …… because the 45th president does not now hold any public office. He’s an ordinary citizen living in Florida, and the Constitution limits the power of the Senate in impeachment to removal from office.”
“That’s not enforcing the Constitution,” Johnson repeated, “What [Democrats] are trying to do now [is] raise the ‘Culture of removal’ to the constitutional level.”
