As the “boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics” is gaining momentum recently, the Chinese Foreign Ministry invited ambassadors and senior diplomats from more than 30 countries, including Russia, France, Germany and Italy, to Zhangjiakou, Hebei Province, to visit the Beijing Winter Olympics site on the 13th and 14th of this month. State Councillor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi personally hosted the reception, emphasizing that organizing the Beijing Winter Olympics is to live up to the eager expectations of the athletes, believing that the Beijing Winter Olympics will become an event that transcends ideologies and warmly welcomes the participation of delegations from all countries.

Wang Yi said at the reception that the Chinese government attaches great importance to the preparatory work for the Beijing Winter Olympics, with President Xi Jinping personally concerned about guidance, and IOC President Bach repeatedly expressing confidence and support. At present, the preparatory work is progressing in an orderly manner. He stressed that to organize the Beijing Winter Olympics is to meet the eager expectations of the athletes and the good wishes of the peace-loving and Olympic spirit-loving people all over the world. Earlier this month, a coalition of some 180 “human rights organizations” including the World Vision Congress and other organizations such as Xinjiang, Tibetan and others, issued an open letter calling for a boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics. At the same Time, a number of U.S. senators proposed to cancel Beijing’s hosting rights for the Winter Olympics, citing China’s human rights record. The Chinese Foreign Ministry criticized the allegations as politically motivated and unlikely to succeed.
