U.S. Navy Rear Admiral James Gilko, captain of the Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, recently said there has been a significant increase in Chinese military operations in the South China Sea, according to the Financial Times. He himself has been in the region for 10 months.
Gilko said he has seen an increasing number of Chinese aircraft and ships in the South China Sea.
For its part, the U.S. has also increased the intensity of the exercises, including the USS Roosevelt and Nimitz-class carriers joining in the action to expand command and management capabilities. China, on the other hand, conducted regular maritime military patrols during the U.S. exercises.
Both Gilko and Rear Adm. Duke Wilythimer, captain of the Roosevelt carrier, said the exercises were not targeted at individuals.
