Oakland, U.S.A. has recently witnessed a series of incidents in which elderly people of Chinese descent were pushed down maliciously. Hong Kong actor Daniel Wu and Korean actor Kim Dae-hyun jointly offered a reward of US$25,000 to find the culprit. Recently, the 28-year-old African-American man who maliciously attacked the elderly was arrested.
At noon on January 31, a horrific scene occurred in Oakland, California’s Chinatown, where a 91-year-old Chinese man was walking down the street when a young man wearing a hat and mask pushed him to the ground from behind and took off.
Surveillance video from the roadside shows the elderly man being pushed and falling heavily to the ground, fearing serious injury. The video quickly went viral on social media, sparking public concern.
Chinese-American actor Daniel Wu and Korean actor Kim Dae-hyun condemned the vicious incident of pushing the elderly man and offered a joint reward of $25,000 on social media platforms to find the culprit.
Robin Wu, who lives in Oakland, said at a community speech that he grew up in the Bay Area and his aunt owned a bakery in Chinatown. When he heard about the incident that pushed the elderly man, his first reaction was to be very shocked and angry.
Ng said, “My father is now 91 years old and cannot imagine what would have happened if he had been pushed over.”
He also said that similar vicious cases have happened recently. A Chinese elder was pushed to death in San Francisco. He hopes to draw the attention of the U.S. government to such incidents.
Another video circulating online shows an 84-year-old Chinese man being pushed violently to the ground in San Francisco, and the elderly man died of his injuries.
On the afternoon of Feb. 8, there was a development in the case of the above-mentioned 91-year-old man who was attacked. Oakland Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong, who is also a member of the Oakland Police Department, said the incident was a “good one. LeRonne Armstrong said at a press conference that a 28-year-old African-American man, Haiya Ye, has been arrested on suspicion of assault. Police have charged him with assault, battery and elder abuse.
Police also said that on Jan. 31, in addition to attacking the 91-year-old man, Yahya also violently pushed a 60-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman, who collapsed on the spot after the attack, and all three elderly people were admitted to the hospital for treatment.
At a press conference that day, Oakland District Attorney Nancy O’Malley said that the man and the woman were in a coma. O’Malley (Nancy O’Malley) said that a special response team will be set up locally to deal with crimes against Asians, especially older Asians.
In the United States, the elderly were pushed down not only happened to the Chinese elderly, white American elders also suffered similar attacks, the perpetrators are mostly African-American.
