The first time I saw the movie, I was able to see it. However, is there really a relationship between the two?

The Emperor was under the control of Empress Dowager Cixi until he became an adult, and only returned to power in 1887, the year he turned 16. However, the return of power to Guangxu did not mean that she was willing to give up her power.

When the emperor got married on the 27th of January 1889, Cixi had to move out of the palace and retire to the Summer Palace because of the ancestral rituals. But at the same time she planted a lot of spies in the court officials, requiring Emperor Guangxu to go to her every day to pay respects, so as to achieve the purpose of mastering the emperor’s movements. The Emperor was not so much in power as in control of Cixi, but in another way to continue to be manipulated.

For the next two years, Emperor Guangxu was manipulated by Empress Dowager Cixi, which made him feel very unhappy. During this period, he tried to do something for the good of the country, but all could not resist the power of Cixi, until 1894 AD, the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese Peasant War, the Guangxu Emperor decided to take on Japan after repeated provocations from Japan, and ordered several times to raise funds for the army.

However, Empress Dowager Cixi advocated for peace, which was completely contrary to the political ideas of Emperor Guangxu, plus she was upset that Emperor Guangxu had asked to stop the construction of the Summer Palace and return the naval pay.

In 1898 A.D., Guangxu Emperor dismissed the Minister of Rites, Huai Tabu and six others, and appointed Tan Sitong and others as military officials to participate in the New Deal. The outbreak of this incident completely offended the Empress Dowager Cixi, and even in secret has been trying to abolish the Guangxu Emperor; and Kang someone and others initiated the arrest of the Empress Dowager Cixi, known by Ronglu and informed the Empress Dowager Cixi, so that the Empress Dowager Cixi accelerated the process of abolishing the emperor.

In 1898, Cixi officially took back the power and imprisoned Guangxu Emperor in the palace. In the years that followed, the Guangxu Emperor was subject to Cixi and quickly lost his will to fight. In 1908, the Emperor became seriously ill and Cixi’s health was not optimistic at this time. The two were at peace with each other and it was a matter of who would boil to death first, but all this was broken when Li Lianying reported to Cixi about the demeanor of the Guangxu Emperor.

It is said that the Guangxu Emperor often wished for Cixi’s early death during his illness, and even wrote in his diary, “I only hope that the old Buddha will die before me, so that I can also do something good for the country and put Yuan Shikai and Li Lianying to death before I die.” It so happened that these remarks were known to Li Lianying and informed the Empress Dowager Cixi, and there was an early death of the Guangxu Emperor.

There have been many different opinions about the death of the Guangxu Emperor, but there has been no definite evidence. It was not until 2008 that the identification of a remnant hair of the Guangxu Emperor was confirmed to be arsenic poisoning, finally confirming the claim that the Guangxu Emperor died at the hands of Cixi.
