Over the Valentine’s Day weekend, 40 states across the United States were under a new wave of cold weather, with about 200 million people nationwide under a winter weather advisory on the 13th, with abnormally cold temperatures stretching as far south as Texas and Louisiana, and most of the country north of the snow, freezing rain and cold winds, making it dangerous to drive outside.
Marc Chenard, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland, said snow and freezing rain are possible from Seattle to Washington and from North Dakota to Louisiana.
Chenard said the 14th to the 15th, the plains states will see more than 6 inches of significant snowfall and freezing rain, threatened by freezing rain as far south as Houston, Texas and Louisiana.
In the Northwest, Portland, Oregon and Seattle snow and freezing rain will continue for 13 days, the areas around Washington, including Virginia, Maryland are freezing rain.
In fact, the cold weather has swept the plains on the 12th, from the east to the west coast are affected by winter weather; 11 early morning freezing rain in Texas and the city (Fort Worth) even triggered a series of large car accidents on Interstate 35 in Texas, more than 130 cars crashed into the stack, six people died and dozens of people were injured.
In Montana and Minnesota, the lowest temperature is -45 degrees Fahrenheit, as for North Dakota, there are cities with temperatures down to -26 degrees; cold weather is expected to erode the northeast, the accumulation of freezing rain is expected to be very small, but any slippage on the road will increase the risk of driving.
Channard said, “Even if the amount is small, as long as it’s freezing rain, even trace amounts could cause problems.”
A major winter storm is expected to bring a lot of freezing rain and snow to many parts of Texas through early next week; Houston has seen highs in the past week of about 70 degrees and often mild winters; but according to forecasts, this year will face the coldest temperatures in 30 years, with temperatures expected to drop to 15 degrees Fahrenheit between the night of the 15th and the early morning of the 16th.
Houston Mayor Turner said officials will open a shelter for the homeless at the City Convention Center. He advised residents to stay off the roads because freezing rain and possibly even snow is expected on the 14th and 15th; the Houston area has rarely seen snow in past years.
